Cobalt

So finally managed to finish my short... and a short it is at less than two minutes. Would have liked to make it longer however given the time constraint, it was the most I could work with! Enjoy

Here's a rough (unfinished) example of how I draft the backgrounds. Firstly I screen grab the view from the appropriate Render Camera in Maya. Then while in Photoshop I begin painting over the image. This essentially allows me to follow "real world" perspective lines for an accurate result.

This is an important phase as it eliminates any chance of  bad syncing between the animated footage and the BG.

While drawing, I can strictly follow the perspective grid OR improvise by adding additional buildings and architecture. In the example below, I pretty much obeyed the screen grab. For some scenes the use of 2.5D in After Effects in called for. This means I must retain distinct layers while in the drawing process i.e.. keeping the foreground, middle and background element separate.

Work Continues

I feel I'm currently in one of those grey areas with this project. Stuck in the doldrums. So far I've animated several scenes and created several BG's to suit. The problem I face now is deciding what areas require the most attention. I find it to be important to always stand on lookout for any problems that may be lurking in the shadows especially the ones that have a tendency to spring up when you least expect them to.

This is a screen cap from today's A.E session. I brought in the work I have completed so far and compiled it together to check for timing issues. This also helps me decide what I need to do next. This scene in particular is one where the main character has accidentally stumbled upon somthing she wished she hadn't.

Walk Cycle

Finally made the time to go back and render my walk cycle. I'm quite happy with the result although I can see a few areas that need improving. I'm definitely going to pay this one a revisit in the coming months.

Maya Character Run Cycle

Here is one of the first final animation gathers for my final year film. I created the model, animation and cloth (hair and scarf) in Maya!

3D Model

Been working on a 3D model in Maya for  a college brief. I wanted to create a basic dude in armour. He's no fully rigged and im currently working on his textures and some animation to bring him to life. Below is a look into the process the model underwent.

I learned a lot about modelling, and especially rigging throughout this project! Next step, textures!

Some Progress

Work continues on my final year animation. I've began roughing out the backgrounds in basic grayscale for continuity purposes. Once I've completed that stage with all the backgrounds, I'll go back and touch them all up. The character seen below is the shorts main star. She was created and animated in Maya.

Statue / Figure

Working on concepts for a city design that will be used in an animation I'm creating. This one is of either a statue or an actual character, maybe both, that will feature in the final animation.

Quick Cannon Concept

After a bit of research I hit the drawing board and drafted up this concept for my buddy. He then created this brilliantly in 3ds. His blog can be found at the link below.

Refinement

Here is a refined version of the set design I uploaded earlier. . By scaling down the bridge it creates a better sense of depth. I added some atmospherics also. These can be added in the final stages of the animation.

Another Set Design

Drafted up another BG for my final year animation. Not too happy with this one, I feel it doesnt convey accurately what I need it to. I'll revisit this one before I give it the go ahead for my animation.

Bit of Fun

I discovered a great facbook page called the Irish Sketch Society. Each week they choose a topic and ask their fans to submit a piece. This week (being Paddys Day and all), the topic was leprechauns! Yeow

Set Design for Animation

Below is the first set design I've created for my final year animation. Im dead set on this style. I now have a select folder of textures that I will use for the rest of the backgrounds. This will help with continuity of style. This was created in Photoshop (its a 3D paint over) and took just over an hour.

A Sphere and Moss

Tomb Raider

I made this for a Lara Croft DeviantArt competition. Unfortunately I didn't place anywhere however I had allot of fun working on it. I learned a good bit about time management and became familiar with my own work flow which i'm sure will help me become a better artist. Really looking forward to playing the new game!

Environments

Below are a selection of some digital paintings that I've created over the summer.
